Ferrari Monza SP1
The Ferrari Monza SP1, together with the Monza SP2, are the forerunners in a new concept, known as ‘Icona’ (Icon), that taps into a leitmotif of the most evocative cars in the company’s history to create a new segment of special limited series cars for clients and collectors. Racing has always greatly influenced Ferrari design language. From the point of view of pure creativity, the seductive images of 1950s Ferrari barchettas, that evoke in so many ways the atmosphere of the races of the day, were an invaluable source of inspiration. The Ferrari Styling Centre’s designers gave the barchetta concept an absolutely modern connotation thanks a new and highly personal take on the theme. But there are no nostalgic references, no elements borrowed directly from the past.
The Monza SP1 design focuses on clean lines and proportions, with the use of carbon fiber for the bodyshell contributing to its lightweight, high-performance nature. The car’s body is broken into two distinct sections—an upper cover and a lower hull—creating a dynamic, almost floating visual effect. This “line of light” is a recurring design theme that adds to the car’s visual coherence, appearing in both the cockpit groove and along elements like the headlights and air vents.
The Virtual Wind Shield uses an aerodynamic passage beneath the driver’s side aero screen, shaped like an aerofoil. Air flows over the bonnet into an intake, accelerating upward to create a high-energy upwash. This deflects air over the driver’s head, forming a low-speed bubble around the cockpit for improved comfort and reduced wind resistance. The result is perfectly balanced handling with zero roll, delivering pure, uncompromising sports-car performance. Without windscreen pillars, the driver’s unobstructed view allows for cornering freedom akin to a Formula 1 car. This ensures engaging, responsive driving on twisty roads—always thrilling, yet effortlessly controlled.
The design’s purity is reinforced by the clean, taut flanks of the car, interrupted only by the sculpted side air vent, which also pays tribute to the classic barchettas (open-top Italian sports cars). The front end is described as minimalist and sleek, with a smooth integration of the bonnet and wings, reinforcing the car’s streamlined, sophisticated aesthetic.
The design emphasizes simplicity and elegance, with flowing shapes and thoughtful details that blend form and function. Sculpted by the wind, it exudes purity and balance—a futuristic aesthetic that pays respectful, yet non-nostalgic, homage to the past. The Monza defies today’s tech-driven car trends, rejecting self-driving and connectivity in favor of pure, driver-focused performance. It celebrates raw power, mechanical precision, and the thrill of control, offering a rebellious tribute to the visceral joy of driving in a hands-off future.
